Building your constellation of mentors

One of the best descriptions of building a mentorship group is that of a constellation. This view has defined how I’ve gone about finding individuals to surround myself, to build me up and challenge me as I develop my career path. It is an archaic notion, especially in this day and age, that we must be bound to a single source of truth or that apprenticeship is the only path to success. As you look to build out your own constellation spend some time, focusing on potential mentors careers as well as their lives and their values. Some one might be a huge success in their field, but might instill values in you that are not looking to build.

Someone might be a huge success in their field, but might instill values in you that you are not looking to build

Now let’s take some time and build out your constellation. There are a few different types of mentors that I would like to cover today. Keep in mind that there is no perfect formula for success and I would highly recommend each of you build your own constellation of mentors and mentees around you:

Inspirations

This is someone who is a few steps ahead of your in life or career. You can relate to them and aspire to reach where they are now. These could be friends, coworkers or someone in the industry that you follow. They can be a great help to avoiding pitfalls that they might have faced or helping you navigate your career path.

Peers

This is someone who is in the same stage or focus of life as you are now, who acutely understands what you are going through and you can lean on each other for support and advise. They can be a great sounding board to your ideas and feed in with thoughts of their own.

Coaches

This is someone who is years ahead of you, who you look up to and have risen to the top of hill that you wish to climb. They have a wealth of knowledge and can open doors for you as need be. Their keen insight into the past can help you make some strategic decisions as you navigate yours.

Challengers

This is someone who provides you a completely different perspective. There might be one or two traits that you share with them, but their role is to challenge your thoughts and ideas and present you with a divergent view of the world. You don’t want to be surrounded by a bunch of yes people or else why bother even having a mentor, if you can provide your own answers to everything.

Other Resources

Can’t seem to find a mentor for specific problem area? We live in the golden age of information, and resources abound to answer and inform. Turn to the internet, books, podcasts, blogs, and so on. With these resources you can have access to a mentor list from Gandhi to Oprah.

The most important element is to seek genuine relationships. This is not a transaction and if your only focus is on what you can get out of it, then you will find yourself frustrated and lost.
